Taufiq;
I see from your email that your country is the same as ours. We have tons of corruption here, it is just not publicized. The corruption is what caused the global economic crisis we have had for the past 2 years around the world. Greece and Portugal are now feeling the effects of the economic crisis that America caused. How it works here is that big businesses pay government officials to vote certain ways or to "look the other way" when companies want to do something they shouldn't. Look at the ENRON scandal! That mess made many people lose their life savings. ENRON paid millions to certain politicians campaigns, which is basically bribery. The governor of Illinois, the state from which President Barack Obama was a senator when he won the presidency, this governor was recorded on tape selling Obama's senate seat to the highest bidder, This is highly illegal and unethical. The governor would have made millions had he not been caught. Almost every day there is a story about a politician doing something they shouldn't which means that the tax dollars from the public are not being spent on what they should be spent. In the area where I live, about twice a month, I read a story about a local government official being charged with embezzlement or misappriopriation of funds or the acceptance of bribes. This is common all over the America.
Our economy is not good and it is not strong. We have the highest unemployment rate in our history. Our economy almost collapsed one year ago. Without the Chinese lending us money, we would have no economy, just like Iceland. Iceland's economy is gone from the global economic crisis of last year. Our economy is still very slow and is suffering setbacks, particularly affected by the possible collapse of Greece and Portugal which would devalue the Euro. Our economy is very much linked to the European Union. If Greece and Portugal's economies fall apart, it will great affect the US. When this kind of scare happens, it affects the stock markets. When people are reluctant to buy and sell on the stock market, the economy slows.
California, where you have a relative in college, is almost ready to declare bankruptcy. The State of California cannot pay its bills. There are many states and cities that cannot pay their bills. In fact, America borrowed $7 trillion from China to keep our economy from collapsing. We are basically owned by the Chinese now. We also owe many other countries money. We will never pay it. Our country was founded on the idea of true capitalism which means that government never interferes with business. However, our big corporations that were going to go bankrupt (which would have collapsed our economy), were given money from the $7 trillion to so the companies could pay their bills. But, instead of paying their workers, they paid the leaders of their companies their salaries and bonuses. This enraged the government and the public that the bailout money was given to one person, who was making billions of dollar a years and did not need the money to keep their house from being taken by the bank.
Our infrastructure is falling apart. The roads built in the 1940s and 1950s are now falling apart. We do not have the money to fix them. This will effect commerce as trucks cannot move goods. Look at the bridge collapse in Minneapolis, MN a few years ago. The government has determined that most of our nation's bridges are unsafe. The aquaducts that carry water to the major cities, paricularly New York City are falling apart. There is no money to fix them. We also have had an increase in college campus and work place shootings. People are gunning others down on college campuses and in businesses. Last year, a graduate student at Harvard was murdered and stuffed inside of a wall by another student. Virginia Tech saw a mass shooting a few years ago.
Your family here may not know about much of these things. They have also not been here long enough to feel the effects of our society and its changes on their lives. As college students, your family members do not know what its like to have to pay real estate taxes, inheritance taxes, and all the other government-related stuff that must be done when living here as a citizen. The insurance industry is one of the biggest money-making rackets. We also do not have universal health care for our citizens like most countries in the world do. Unless you can pay for your own health care, you do not get any, unless you are an illegal immigrant, you can get almost anything. This is one of the major issues with our public here. If you are a citizens or a legal alien and you do all that you are supposed to do (pay taxes, not steal, vote, etc), you get nothing but having to pay higher taxes. But if you are here illegally, you can get a lot of free services and housing and food. In short, we do not take care of our own citizens, unless they are very wealthy and they give money to a political campaign! Remember, I am 21 years older than you are and have been an American citizen all my life so I've seen the changes in our society and know about the less-than-good things about this country.
